Fall 2006 Shoe Guide: A Shoe-In for Style

After the New York fall previews, I am in LOVE with everything Nanette Lepore and her garnet accents. Have anticipated the coming change-of-seasons for months now. (I don't know that there exists a seasonal change which I do not anticipate, but for now it happens to be fall.) Last week, I did a little shoe reconnaissance at the local malls and boutiques. I wasn't disappointed by what I saw, but the moment I stepped foot into Nordy's on Monday I sensed it: new shoe displays; new fall designs and sexy colors beckoning me.

I swiftly responded by first, keeping my composure (as I was in public) and second, by phoning She She Me to inform her of the impending shoe shopping successes in our very near future. After seizing a few necessary items, I got down to the serious business of perusing the proffered styles, making copious notes and compiling the following list of fall footwear guidelines:

Summer Keepers: That's right. This year we find ourselves with an instant head-start on fall shoe fashion. Those peep-toe wedges and kitten heels you purchased at the Last Call Sales will enjoy long weeks of continued fashionable use far into this fall season. Keep in mind the tights and leggings trend, however, and get yourself some closed-toe soles (preferably in this season's hot loafer style!)

Solids: Though the regular autumn-leaf-pallet will never fail your fall fad smarts, this season's hottest colors are immersed golds, rich reds and opulent purples. Earthy tones remain fall favorites (browns, grays, greens), and solids will be your best bet, particularly if you are on a tighter budget, as they will easily complement the upcoming season's fashions (though this Burberry ballerina flat positively screams fall).

Prints: Exotic prints-namely leopard, croc and python (faux, of course; we she she girls are nothing if not completely PC)-are über hot this year. Ann Taylor's sexy croc slingback will add the perfect finishing touch to your gorgeous new garb (especially when you pair them with this DKNY shoulder bag).

Fabrics: Suede, leather and velvet will be all the rage this fall. Also, keep your eye out for patents and you'll be right up there with Hollywood 's best dressed.

Must-Haves: Boots, boots and more boots!. Fall's best friend-hands down. And this year's hot styles? Flat boots (very weekend-at-my-country-manor), knee-high styles, simple cuffed boots and slouchy pull-on's (Will look fabulous with fall's favorite skinny jeans.) Also, ankle boots are de rigueur this season; just what you need with the requisite leggings and minis.

Vintage: This retro Juicy Couture says it all. Vintage is back this fall, and with it-glamour! You'll see everything from platforms to flats to ankle boots. On my wish list this fall: Kate Spade's 'Kady' boot. Patent leather, suede and even a precious bow on the heel. So delicate and feminine; this ankle boot will not escape my clutches.

Heels: You all remember last fall, I presume. And the sheer pleasure of striding through the falling leaves with a flirty scarf and a sexy pair of pumps (along with coordinating attire, naturally). This season takes the traditional pump to a higher level, namely, a platform. Another fall footwear fave-the classic Mary Jane, but with a higher heel and a girly spin. And finally, the ever elegant T-strap. A gorgeous suede or leather t-strap makes this sometimes bare style completely appropriate for fall.

Flats: The moment I saw this little vintagesque red flat I thanked my lucky stars (as did my wallet noting the price)! Look for rich colors and sweet details to complement your fall footwear wardrobe.
